Foods You Can Freeze To Save Money, Time & Space

Lists of foods you can, cannot, could and should freeze; links to other blogs about the subject; container and jar options for freezing

With big bulk food stores, such as Costco, it’s not uncommon for people to stock up on food. In fact, it has become very easy to do so. This may cause an issue for some people though, here is why. When the price is so good on bulk items that you can’t pass up on the offer, you go ahead and buy it. Then, you end up loosing the food because it was not consumed fast enough because of its large quantity. If this is the case for you, you know that the fact of throwing away food defeats the whole purpose of buying in bulk.

I’m here to tell you that buying food in bulk can be done if you plan ahead and organize your food by freezing as much of it as you can. Bulk-food buying (as I like to call it) is not only for large families. It can also apply to smaller families and/or households with fewer members.

Foods you can and cannot easily freeze

I did some research on this. I was happily surprised to see that the list of foods that can be frozen is a lot longer than I thought. I found two detailed lists of items that can be frozen on Lauren Greutman’s website. She not only lists foods that you can and cannot freeze, but she also shares tips and tricks on how to freeze certain food items properly.

I decided to compare Lauren’s lists with another one I found online on Kalyn Brooke’s website called The Master List of Foods that Can and Cannot be Frozen. What is neat about Kalyn’s list is that she provides a PDF document that you can download. This will help guide you as to what can and cannot be frozen.

Here is a combination of all that can be frozen and of what cannot be frozen from both of these websites:

What surprised me the most

Do you know what item surprised me the most? For whatever reason, I was surprised that milk could be frozen. I very well know that breast milk can be frozen and that many dairy products can be frozen as well. I’ve been freezing and testing many of them myself. It never crossed my mind that cow’s milk could be frozen!

What foods I have personally frozen

I hate loosing food. Yet, I love stocking up on food in bulk or on food at a good price so I’ve had to freeze our food and have been doing it for a long time. What is genius about freezing food it that it saves:

  • money – since you are using your food instead of loosing it; less waste
  • time – no need to go to the grocery store every couple of days to get what you need since you already have it (frozen) at home
  • space – if you follow these tricks, you will save space within your freezer which will help you see everything you have at a glance

Have you tried freezing any of the above mentioned foods?

As far as overripe bananas, I’m not sure if you can relate but I’m a little obsessed with freezing them. Not too long ago, I had a grand total of 31 frozen bananas! I still bought some at the grocery store that same week after counting what I had in the freezer (gasp!). Because they are so versatile, I think I have a phobia of running out of them. I’m sure there’s a name for that…

Foods I can’t wait to try to freeze

Now that I am better educated as to which foods can be frozen, I can’t wait to test freezing some of them.

I hate when I buy a bunch of avocados and they all become ripe at the same time. I can never eat them all fast enough so freezing them would be a great alternative for me.

The same goes with butter. I know that it stores well in the fridge but, I don’t want to dedicate a whole refrigerator shelf to a dozen bricks of butter. If I come upon a good deal, I’d like to be able to stock up and freeze them.

What about you? Do you have any experience with freezing food? Have you read my previous blog post on how to freeze your food in glass containers? Let me know in the comments below.
